Curious

Although the Roman military causeway—of
which some fragments still remain—from Brittanodunum
to Alterva (i.e. from Dunbar to Cramond)
passed close to it, the Castle rock never appears
to have become a Roman station; and it is sufficiently
curious that the military engineers of the
invaders should have neglected such a strong and
natural fortification as that steep and insulated
mass, situated as it was in Valentia, one of their
six provinces in Britain.
