The dreg song
There must have been fishermen in Newhaven even
in those early days of its history, for we find James IV
going with them to the oyster-dredging. As the fishers
were accustomed to sing songs while at work, and the
king was passionately fond of music, we may be sure
the ” dreg song ” was struck up on these occasions, for
” The oysters are a gentle kin’,
They winna tak unless ye sing.”
