The History of Leith

As a place for brawling it was proverbial; and
thus it was that Colonel Munro, in “His Expedition
with the Worthy Scots Regiment called
Mackeyes.” levied in 1626, for service in Denmark
and Sweden, tells us, at the storming ‘of Boitzenburg,
there was ” a Scottish gentleman under the
enemy, who, coming to scale the walls, said aloud,
‘ Have with you, gentlemen ! Thinke not now
you are on the street of Edinburgh bravading.’ One
of his own countrymen thrusting him through the
body with a pike, he ended there.”
