James Sandilands, 1st Lord Torphichen

James Sandilands was born circa 1511 in Calder, West Lothian, Scotland, and died in 1579 ~ according to the Scots Peerage 1911, Burke’s Peerage 1999/2004, and current editions of Debrett’s Peerage. However some publications have given his death at a later date.[1][2] Reference to his 1579 death: “Sir James Sandilands, first Lord Torphichen, had married Janet, daughter of William Murray of Polmaise,.. dying without issue at Hallyards, 29th September 1579..” (quoted from ‘The Scots Peerage, founded on Wood’s Edition of Sir Robert Douglas’s Peerage of Scotland; Vol.VIII, edition 1911, page 387). Burke’s Peerage (1999 edition, p.2831) as well as confirming his date of death as 29th Sept 1579 also mentions the date of death of his wife Janet, being 29 November 1596, which some historical books have given as an alternative date of his own death. He was the second son of Sir James Sandilands, 7th Lord of Calder. The feudal barony of Calder had belonged to the Sandilands clan since 1348. for more click here
