Candles at South Leith

10 October 1692.—Recommends to ye Thesaurer . . . to view ye church and to see how many candles will be needful and to order them accordingly.
(Note.—Candles were used in the church until 1833, and seatholders were in the habit of providing their own lights for the dark days. There are members presently in the church who can recollect all the transitions of lighting, viz., candles, paraffin, gas, and electricity.)
