The searchers

22 March 1744. — Recommends to the R.R. Ministers to desire the Baillie to cause the Town officers to keep the entry to the Church and Trances free of noise and disturbance by boys and girls in time of publick worship and in that case the Session will allow them 8 pence monthly of addition to the Ten pence formerly allowed them for attending the Session and Searchers.
(Note. — This Minute indicates the close connection between the civil and the church authorities. It indicates that the searchers could avail themselves of their assistance in putting down Sabbath breaking.)
