The Graveyard of South Leith in the past
Many people have asked how large was the original graveyard of South Leith Church. The general opinion held is that it extended into Leith Links. This I beleive is wrong for two very good reasons-
a) The Churchyard would have been stopped by the town wall erected in 1548. So after 1548 it couldn’t extend onto Leith Links
and
b) The Precepory of St Anthony had a graveyard on its South Side (now St Anthony Street) where human remains were found in the 19th century which would have been lost by the destruction of the Preceptory in 1560 and moved east to South Leith.
