Elphinstone Family

John Elphinstone, 4th Lord Balmerinoch was born on 26 December 1652 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 He married, firstly, Lady Christiana Montgomerie, daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 7th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Mary Leslie, on 15 February 1671/72 at Holyrood House, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.3 He married, secondly, Ann Ross, daughter of Most Rev. Arthur Ross, on 12 June 1687 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1,3 He died on 13 May 1736 at age 83 at Leith, Scotland.1 He was buried on 17 May 1736 at Restalrig, Midlothian, Scotland.1
He was the son of John Elphinstone, 3rd Lord Balmerinoch and Lady Margaret Campbell.2 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] on 16 August 1687.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Lord Balmerinoch [S., 1606] on 10 June 1704.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Coupar [S., 1607] on 10 June 1704.4 He held the office of Sheriff of County Edinburgh in 1710.1 He held the office of Governor of the Mint in 1710.1 He held the office of a Representative Peer [Scotland] (Tory) in 1710.1 He held the office of a Commissioner of the Office of Lord Chamberlain in 1711.1 He held the office of a Representative Peer [Scotland] (Tory) in 1713. for more click here
