Records not held in the NAS

The National Archives of Scotland (NAS) is not the only repository of historical records in Scotland. Important family history records are held in the General Register Office for Scotland. Many of Scotland’s local authorities, universities, health boards, and other corporate bodies also keep historical records and maintain archive services. Some government records relating to Scotland are held by The National Archives (in London).

Here are some categories of record which are not, as a rule, in the NAS:

• army, navy and air force service records
• census returns
• civil registers of births, deaths and marriages
• film
• local government records
• old parish registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths
• records in private hands
• ship passenger lists
• UK government records

These records are held by the institutions listed below. for more click here
