During the Reformation the lands of Holyrood in North Leith were transfered to John Bothwell who was created Lord Holyroodhouse amongst these properties was Hillhousefield. According to one story Mary,Queen of Scots is supposed to have planted a Weeping Thorn in the grounds of the house. It was actually grown from a slip from another tree planted by the Queen.
