TORPHICHEN PRECEPTORY: A FOOTNOTE TO THE PUBLISHED DESCRIPTIONS

As readers will know, McGibbon and Ross included the Preceptory of Torphichenin both the Ecclesiastical Architecture of Scotland and in the Domestic and Castellated. It is a tribute to the thoroughness of their work that, within the limits they set themselves, their accounts are still authoritative. The only subsequent description of importance is that in the Inventory of Ancient Monuments for Mid and West Lothian, which gives a much more detailed account of the stages in the developmentof the surviving buildings and of some of their features of interest.
