From the high seas to the Leith gallows


THEIR savage fighting, drinking and carousing under the emblem of the skull and cross-bones has inspired many a Hollywood film. The golden age of pirates from the 1690s until 1722 saw gangs of unruly sailors terrorise the seas in a quest for untold riches.

Living in pirates’ nests on islands in the Caribbean or the Indian Ocean, the goal for many was to make their fortune through one big hit, after which they would retire and become gentlemen. But for hundreds of pirates they ended their days with a crowd baying for their blood and nooses tightening round their necks on the sands of Leith. for more click here
