The Story of a Family

paradox. They may give us
identity but that very identity is
an absurdity.”

“Surnames come from our fathers, and from our fathers’ fathers. However, by looking only for the origins of our names, we miss out on the rich tapestry of the many different families who have given us their genes.”

The author travels from Scotland to London and South Africa in search of his paternal ancestors. He traces his roots to the early 18th Century, and reconstructs the lives of three families whose paths entwined in 19th Century Leith.
