The Story of John Paul Jones

In the year 1779, Leith was thrown into the utmost confusion and alarm, by the appearance of the noted John Paul Jones.

On the evening of the 16th September several strange sails were seen in the Firth of Forth. These it was soon known as rumours had been in circulation that pirate ships were on the coast and were the ships of John Paul Jones. From those looking from the Shore and Pier they could be seen off Inchkeith.

However it was noticed that the ships couldn’t advance further up the Forth because of adverse winds. Then a storm blow up driving John Paul Jones out of the Forth. This storm it is said was raised by the Rev Sheriff of Kirkcaldy as when he seen the ships he rushed down to the beach and there prayed to God for a storm which happened.

John Paul Jones born in Scotland went to America and later founded the American and as fate would have it the Russian Navy as well.

After this Leith became fortified and the Royal Artillery were stationed in Leith up to the Second World War.
