The Author of Sherlock Holmes

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in York Place near the top of Leith Walk in 1859. The character of Holmes is based on the Edinburgh Doctor Dr Joseph Bell and first appeared in 1887 in the Beetons Christmas Annual. Although the character was popular Dolye felt he was kept from writing historical novels in which he was more interested and so he tried to kill off Holmes but was forced by popular demand to bring him back.
