Strange bedfellows

NICE timing, I thought, when I saw that journalist-turned-historian Michael Fry had produced a new history of the Union of 1707. Right on time to mark the 300th anniversary of that constitutional arrangement under which everyone on this island lives. The Union of 1707 may not be as iron- bound as it was – what with the 21st century Scottish parliament – but it’s still pretty strong. And if anyone doubts that, they should consult Schedule Five of the Scotland Act, which tells our parliament exactly what it cannot do. for more click here
