The Duke of Wellington had no doubt about where the credit lay for the British victory over Napoleon: ‘It is our maritime superiority gives me the power of maintaining my army.’ Yet reading many accounts of the Napoleonic Wars, one is left with the impression that little happened at sea after Trafalgar.
