Holbein could do it all

Holbein was the most important artist ever to work in Britain. It’s that simple. When he arrived here from Basel in the autumn of 1526, he encountered a country that was timidly edging its way out of the Middle Ages. Artistically and intellectually, England was the Romania of the Renaissance. Holbein changed all that single-handedly. The mere presence of the gigantically talented German altered the level of our culture in the way that the introduction of a whale would alter the water level of a pond. for more click here
