Leith,St James and Pilgrimage.

John Russell in his “Story of Leith” states the following-“Every year as June and July came round,companies of pilgrims had for long centuries been accustomed to embark at the Shore to voyage by way of Bruges to the shrine of that most popular of saints in Western Europe, St James of Compostella, in Spain and to retirn in September with their clam shells in token of their pilgrimage”
