The History of Leith

February 20, 2006

Goodbye, George

This is no half-baked story, the man spoke my language. Old George Baxter has passed on, five years short of his century, the heart and soul of Leith. Only a few months ago he was singing round community centres and nursing homes in Edinburgh, a member of the Travellers Entertainment Group.

A character, George was born in Granton Cottages but spent all of his married life in the port’s West Bowling Green Street. I had a granny who lived there but they never met, far as I know.

He had his memoirs, written in broad Leith lingo, published three years ago at an Ocean Terminal launch and his claim to be the oldest docker in Leith was undisputed. George had an endearing habit of baking scones for the folk he entertained.
