View from the Turret Room

No man is an island entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main, if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of they friends or of thine own were any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee.

John Donne

“Vandals hit Asian Cars in Edinburgh” and “Racist Vandals in attacks on cars owned by Asians” are the headlines from India to Britain. Is this the message that we want to send to the rest of the World that we are are racist and intolerant surely not.

Leith for hundreds of years, not yesterday or last week, but for centuries has welcomed strangers and made them part of the community no different from anyone else and because of this a very strong community spirit developed which still exists to this very day and that is a historic fact. Are we now to lose our reputation for tolerance because of a few mindless half wits especially when the whole community are trying to improve things for everyone.

The Asian Community are part of the Community of Leith and no different from anyone else. Many were born and educated here and are quite entitled to the same oportunities and respect as anyone else is.

Please let me know that Leith supports the Asian Community not as something separate from the Leith Community but as part of the Community. Also that racist behaviour will never and I mean never will be accepted here. If you share my utter disgust over this then please let me know.
