Victorian View

This a Victorian Ideal of Family Worship
This picture taken from “A Guide to Family Devotion” by the Rev Alexander Fletcher shows a family and servants worshiping at home. Although this level of piety happened it masked a darker side to Victorian society. Leith at this period had the highest death rate in Scotland through poor housing and disease which was only reduced towards the end of the 19th century. Not only this society itself was split between the middle class and the working class which gave rise to the Trade Union Movement and Socialism in Scotland
