The Witches Hammer

Frontispiece from the Witches Hammer 1487

By the 15th century a belief in devils was at its peak and this book “The Witches Hammer” was the definitive work on witches and their connection with the devil. Belief in witchcraft was strong in Leith right up to the end of the 17th century and many cases are recorded in the Kirk Records of both North and South Leith Churches. In fact the laws against Witchcraft were only abolished in the 1950’s.
