Leith Archaeology

“Headland Archaeology are currently excavating a site for Barratt Homes on Giles Street. All evidence so far relates to post-medieval buildings on the (former) St Andrews Street and Giles Street frontage, including some interesting early cellars.

At the moment we are working on the area between Smeaton’s Close and The Vaults, which has a well-preserved post-med sequence. A lot of detailed historical research will need to be done in due course, and I would be very interested to talk to local historians who may have more knowledge of the documentary sources.

Also, we are planning an open day on Sunday 8 August, so I’m on the lookout for images that we might be able to use for a display.”

If anyone has old photographs of Giles Street I would like to borrow them and they will be returned to the owners. This is a important piece of research and all possible help would be appreciated
